CITES Unit of Natural History Museum

What is CITES ?

CITES or the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna is the treaty that monitors and regulates international trade in endangered species. It came into force in 1973 and today 145 countries are signatories to it. Natural History Museum of Nepal is playing an active role in the scientific side to implement the act of CITES. This museum housed a large number of faunal as well as floral specimens of the country including the species which are listed in the CITES appendix. NHM has already established a good role in providing scientific and conservation inputs for the conservation of Nepal’s rare, endangered, vulnerable and important species of fauna.
